MAX KLINGER
German, Born in Leipzig in 1857 - died in Grobjena (Naumburg) in 1920 |
We are pleased to feature original works from three facets of his oeuvre including sculpture, works on paper and oil on canvas .
Max Klinger had a pivotal role in influencing many leading Symbolist, Surrealist, Naturalist and Art Nouveau artists of the early 20th century.
Klinger is primarily known for etchings he created in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He began as a student in 1874 at the Grand Ducal Baden Art School in Karlsruhe. In 1875 he attended the Royal Academy of Art in Berlin and studied under Karl Gussow. He was widely acclaimed for his 1880 etching , entitled "Eva und die Zukunft". In 1881 he opened his first studio in Berlin Germany. By 1884 Max Klinger was appointed a member of the Berlin Artists' Association. His first full scale commission was in 1883/84 for the villa of Julius Albers, a junior lawyer at the Superior Court of Justice in Berlin. The same year Klinger was able to afford a Paris studio and spent much of his time studying works in the Louvre. He returned to Berlin and worked closely with Arnold Böcklin in 1887. For the next five years his fame and fortune allowed him to visit Rome, Brussels, Paris, Athens, London and Munich. In 1893 he returned to his native city of Leipzig where he became even more successful and was appointed a member of the Munich Academy and also a professor at the Royal Academy of the Graphic Arts in Leipzig. Max Klinger is considered one of the founders of the Vienna Secession.
